Adaptation Part B - Animation Style - CBT

Researching Animation and Styles I would like to pursue the use of a narrator so a script would have to be made. Because of the time the Coney Globe Tower (CBT was perceived to start construction, doing it in this style I would already be breaking the historic wall. So Firstly I reviewed the Vault -Tec Commercial for the Fallout series.
Vault Tec Commercial

This style is of course without colour as I think should be the same for my final designs, it would help that language that this construction is from that era even better as colour footage wasnt around until some 30 years later. I also enjoyed the idea of illustrating a simple 2D Character to follow alongside the narrators guide much like the Vault Tec Commercial.
Pipboy Character from fallout

I think that Pipboy does a fantastic job at making such a grim subject colourful again, The idea I'm pitching is much more elaborate and exciting so I would like to illustrate that perhaps with a business type character that would approve of the construction and react to small puns perhaps from the narrator.

Lost Film From 1906

Even though this footage was captured in San Francisco in 1906 this is the filter effect I should pursue to intergrate into my animation. The dOl' Timey music suits the time period well and even this footage is like a guide down a main street and feels exuberant.

Old Movie Effect Tutorial

I found an appropriate tutorial to follow to gain the quick effect, I would also like to add additional effects to make the animation feel like burnt out footage and have stutter rolls as the film proceeds.

Adaptation Part B - Coney Globe Tower Further Research

The most ambitious and unusual amusement park projects for Coney Island was announced in a newspaper ad on May 6, 1906 in the New York Herald.

Advertisement Information

  • Offering investors "a ground floor chance to share profits in the largest steel structure ever erected...the greatest amusement enterprise in the whole world...the best real estate venture,"
  • The ad explained that it would cost $1,500,000 to erect. The public was urged to invest on the expectations that it would pay 100 % interest annually.
  • There was a cornerstone laying ceremony on May 26, 1906. It was complete with speeches, band concerts and fireworks. There was a rush of investors at the Glove Tower Company office built next to the first socle. But by the end of the 1906 season, when the foundations were still incomplete, investors became anxious.
  • Another ceremony was held on February 17, 1907. A band was on hand when they put the first piece of steel in position. The company claimed they were driving 800 concrete foundation piles, each 30 feet long and five feet in circumference. They promised that half of the eleven floor structure would be open to the public on May 15th and the remainder would be fully operational the following year.
Premise Information
  • For Samuel Friede a structure in the shape of a globe or sphere that was subdivided into floors, was simply a source of immense square footage that needed a tiny point of contact with earth to support it.
  • The tower's blueprints showed a gigantic steel planet that had collided onto a replica of the Eiffel Tower. As a whole it was 700 feet high, three times as high as the Flatiron Building.
  • The Globe Tower would be the largest building in the world with enormous elevators to carry visitors to its eleven completely different floors. It would be an agglomeration of Steeplechase, Dreamland and Luna Park, all contained in a single interior volume.
  • Leasing a small corner of the Steeplechase property on Surf Avenue to erect this colossal structure. The structure would be supported by eight enormous socles (pedestals) whose foundations would be 35 feet deep. Underground was planned as a multi-level interchange of various modes of transport: a combination parking garage, subway and railroad station with a branch heading out towards sea to connect with the boat pier.
Construction Information (Very important information)

150 Feet
  • The Globe would be divided into eleven floors, beginning 150 feet above the ground and spaced at intervals of fifty feet. The lowest or first level would feature a Pedestal Roof Garden with a popular priced restaurant, continuous vaudeville theater, roller skating rink, bowling alley, slot machines, etc.
250 Feet
  • At the 250 foot level there would be an Aerial Hippodrome seating 5000 people. It would feature four large circus rings and four immense animal cages; each ring representing a different continent. Performances would be continuous and a miniature railroad would circle the arena's perimeter.
300 Feet
  • The Globe's Main Hall would be located at the 300 foot level. Here would be the largest ballroom in the world and a moving restaurant enclosed in glass. A revolving strip twenty-five feet wide would carry tables, kitchens and patrons around the outer edge of the Tower to give the effect of eating in an airborne dining car. Diners would have a moving panoramic view of Coney Island, the countryside and Greater New York.
Hotel Floor
  • Friede, who envisioned continuous 24 hour use of his Globe Tower by its 50,000 temporary residents, planned a hotel floor at the sphere's equator. Rooms would be small but luxuriously equipped and padded with sound proofing for undisturbed sleep.
350 Feet
  • Fried's floor layout implicitly used social stratification. The facilities were increasing refined and elegant the higher one would ascend. The level above at 350 feet would feature an Aerial Palm Garden, a more expensive restaurant with tables scattered in a palm garden with cascades of running water each screened from each other by shrubbery. It was to be arranged on the Italian Garden plan.
500 Feet
  • The Observatory platform was at the 500 foot level. At the highest platform in New York visitors could use coin operated telescopes to see more than 50 miles. There would also be a souvenir stand and various small concessions.
600 Feet
  • Near the tower's top at the 600 feet level would be the United States Weather Observation Bureau and Wireless Telegraph Station. It would be equipped with modern weather recording devices. And at the very top would be the largest revolving searchlight in the world. The tower itself, lit by thousands of electric lights, would resemble a gigantic tower of fire.

Adaptation Part B - Ken Adams

After my tutorial Tuesday with Alan I was prompted to review a theater type production designer, this was to be carried out with bringing dramatic flair to my future workings in mind. Ken Adams was a British movie production designer, best known for his set designs for the James Bond films of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as for Dr. Strangelove. He won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction.

I like the theatrical styles achieved in this artwork, the artist is able to boast grand scale and size as the importance of the design. I also observe the lines converge to usually one specific point, which in turn manipulates the edges of the interior to benefit that. After reviewing Ken Adams as an artist I wish to experiment with scale and theater in my future designs

Man Vs Machine - Story Workshop Aftermath & Research

Man Vs Machine

"His Knees Steadied, His Heart Beat Fiercely And He Began To Run Again"

My group Stride Animation has constructed a story from the aftermath of the workshop. The experience was enlightening and shed some light on elements we can use for a proposal for animation. The ending sentence is sourced from Blair Witch Project and that film is littered with abstract shots, close ups and values highly sound design to increase tension. So the first step to strengthening our story is looking at what makes a high speed chase so intense and the shots we can create to illustrate that. Below is the summary of the story - The overall jist
_________________________________________________________________________________
- We hear smashing glass and hot-wiring as a man breaks into a car. He seems quite pleased with himself speeding down the street and enjoying himself. It soon comes apparent to the audience he is a criminal on the run from the law, he notices a warrant for his arrest and paranoia sets in. Street lights turn into flashing blue lights and the sounds around him are amplified, he thinks someone is shooting at the car when in fact its a car backfiring. The criminal speeds up even faster, tension builds as he thinks the threat of apprehension gets closer. He goes through a tunnel where he focuses and calms down, realises he's being paranoid. As he leaves the tunnel speeding still he is seen speeding by a real police car and a crash happens fades to black.

Reviewing some iconic car chases there are actual set camera placements that compliment different actions for the driver. Placing the camera about the car could give us a sense of what kind of shots we can aim to produce. But before that we need to choose a Time and Place for this animation to take place. Somewhere that compliments whats going on in the 90 seconds and doesn't add any un-needed designs to our animation.

We ultimately aim for the point of the animation to be clear to the audience so perhaps simplistic and stylised is really the way to go.

Telltale Games - Good Omens Inspiration

The Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us is set in the year 1986, decades before the events of the first issue of Fables. For years, many of the magical and mystical lands described in myth, legend, and folklore (known colloquially as "the homelands") have been occupied by an enigmatic tyrant known only as the Adversary. To escape the Adversary's marauding armies and totalitarian regime many creatures and characters known as "fables" fled to the mundane world and created an enclave known as Fabletown in colonial America, now located in modern-day Manhattan. To mask their presence from the native humans (referred to as "mundies") all non-human fables have to purchase an enchantment known as a "glamour" which allows them to appear human, or be relocated to a rural community known as "The Farm".

The Walking Dead : The Game

The game opens with Lee Everett on his way to prison after his conviction in Atlanta, Georgia. In route, the deputy sheriff's car in which he is travelling strikes a walker and careens off-road. The officer is killed in the crash, and Lee takes shelter in a nearby home, discovering a little girl named Clementine hiding in her tree house. After learning that her parents had previously left for Savannah, Lee offers to protect and care for Clementine, and help her find them.

Game Of Thrones : The Game

At the Red Wedding, the Stark bannerman Lord Gregor Forrester and his heir Rodrik are killed by the Freys. Lord Forrester's squire Gared is sent to the Wall to escape the revenge of the ascendant Boltons, and his daughter Mira, a lady-in-waiting for the King's bride Margaery Tyrell, looks for support for her family at the court in King's Landing. But the young heir to House Forrester, Ethan, is nonetheless killed by Ramsay Snow, bastard and enforcer of the new Warden of the North, Roose Bolton, in order to gain control of the Forresters' valuable Ironwood reserves. Lady Forrester sends her brother, Malcolm, to search Essos for her son Asher.

Adaptation & Professional Practice Part B - 70/80's Tv Attire

I have combed through everything I could to find out what year that the book 'Good Omens' takes place, it only states what places the book takes us to. So taking this into consideration I thought using the date the book was originally published might be the best point of entry to designing my characters. The book was published May 1st 1990, but I have chosen to look at some British Television police drama examples for inspiration. I am looking to put the characters in a 85-90's environment, I think the following are good examples to designs their costumes into.

The Sweeney
British police TV series which revolutionized the genre on UK television in the mid-1970s starring John Thaw as a hard-edged detective in the Flying Squad of London's Metropolitan Police.
Life On Mars
After being involved in a car accident in 2006, DCI Sam Tyler (Simm) wakes up to find himself in 1973, the era of 'Sweeney' type policing, Mark III Cortinas, and flared trousers.

The Professionals
This series chronicled the lives of Bodie and Doyle, top agents for Britain's CI5 (Criminal Intelligence 5), and their controller, George Cowley. The mandate of CI5 was to fight terrorism

Adaptation & Professional Practice Part B - Crowley & Aziraphale Design Inspirations

I researched some possible attires for Crowley, I was most drawn to the largest costume on the screen because of the embodied designs into the trench-coat. For me it illustrates how old the design could be and intricate as if carefully planned. It could then help the viewers realise he is very stylish and intelligent. This paired with the addition of the glasses and yellow snake eyes could make for a sinister character design.

Also it would make sense for there to be some form of patterning into his clothing because he is first introduced as a snake to the audience, even down to the fact he hisses his tongue every now and then. I understand that the book explicitly says that he wears all out black attire, but I would like to break the colour into a crimson shade also, because then I could bring another colour into creating Aziraphale.

To fit Aziraphale into the same kind of environment as Crowley there needs to be similar or opposite design choices in his attire, I thought that the waist coat could have heavenly symbols on it and really sell him as a pure certified religious character, but toned down slightly. maybe small hints towards this. Ideally I would like to use light greys and brilliant whites for this character, maybe the scarf he wears could be a tartan green?

Adaptation & Professional Practice Part B - Aziraphale & Crowley Styles

BBC Radio 4 Part 1 Illustration
As part of the Radio 4 live adaptation of the best-selling novel 'Good Omens', They issued some illustrations to capture key moments from the novel to highlight the significance of each stage to the listeners. In this particular stage its the beginning of the story, so it tells us the origins of the character and the significance of the items they wield.
 Dining at the Ritz
In there many encounters together, they tend to go to the more posh and expensive meets. The Ritz is one of these places. It seems fitting for two head honchos for good an evil meet up and sit on opposite ends of the table to discuss how things are.

 Steampunk version
The steampunk version was different to vision, although it could have taken steps further down that path, with the only plausible links I could see were the animatrons in the pieces. Tackling the style away from realism may give me the originality I desire.
Discussing Business
When Crowley and Aziraphale meet it is always to discuss what each other had done to kind of measure egos. But in there meets they seem to be able to tease each other but always seem calm and collected instead of at each others throats, trying to assassinate each others plans. Its like they understand the need for balance.

Adaptation & Professional Practice Part B: Feedback

For the Adaptation & Professional Practice Part B project, I would like to create character designs that can then propose an animation project into the area. I wish to do character design because I feel personally I haven't explored the area well enough, both in initial designs and in maya builds. I would like to make this the project that has me going back to developing characters and working on this skill.

Alan and I discussed some feasible sources to create an adaptation from, I presented 4 possible choices of novels;  The Martian, Good Omens, Steelheart and finally Misspent Youth. All of the books have a promise to character I believe and the best I think would be 'Good Omens'.

Terry Pratchett has a reputation for detailing splendid characters, I also believe that from extracts I can create 3D character designs for them. Of course I must read this novel to uncover reasons to why the characters must be created to propose an animation. I researched some quotes of the character descriptions taken directly from the novel, I think the details are enough for a starting point for creating the characters three-dimensionally. Also take into account that the descriptions of the characters aren't all put on the same paragraph as they are introduced. Their attitudes and appendages are detailed the longer you read about them;

The Four Horsemen of the apocalypse

Death
-He has the grinning, skeletal appearance of the traditional image of the Grim Reaper, and his voice is “a dark echo from the night places, a cold slab of sound, grey, and dead”
-Extremely tall, when wishing to conceal his identity he wears a long black coat and hides his terrifying features behind a motorcycle helmet
-Death unfurls “wings of night, wings that were shapes cut through the matter of creation into the darkness underneath” and reveals himself as “the angel of Death”.

War
-In the Good Omens universe, War isn’t a man, but a woman, who calls herself Scarlett or Carmine Zuigiber
-Her hair was true auburn, neither ginger nor brown, but deep and burnished copper-color, and it fell to her waist in tresses that men would kill for, and indeed often had. Her eyes were a startling orange. She looked twenty-five, and always had”
-Her laugh is like “machine-gun stutter
-And though she’s described as beautiful, it’s “the way a forest fire was beautiful: something to be admired from a distance, not up close”

Famine
-Looks like a “pleasant, thrusting, successful businessman”
-He’s thin, of course. He has black hair, a short black beard, and he dresses all in black. He has “dark grey eyes”
-“Tall gent with a beard, nice suit.”

Pollution
- “His skin was pale, his hair a faded blond, his eyes light gray. He was somewhere in his twenties at a casual glance, and a casual glance was all anyone ever gave him.
- “Farther down the riverbank sat a young man dressed all in white. His hair was white, his skin chalk pale. He looked like Victorian Romantic poets looked just before the consumption and drug abuse really started to cut it”
- A little later, it’s specified that his hair is long
- He enjoys his job: to him, a polluted river is “all so damn beautiful”
- “The wind blew empty crisp packets and newspapers and ice cream wrappers in with him. They danced around his feet like excited children, then fell exhausted to the floor.”

Adaptation & Professional Practice Part A - infographic style ideas

I have looked into a few different animations and info graphics I feel could influence my own workings and perhaps inspire a new style for me. Taken from a scene in Wall-e, this is the culture aboard the axiom. With the screens heavily influencing the lives of the passengers, it instructs them on the day. The enthusiastic voice is ironic I think because everyone aboard the vessel is morbidly obese, the Axiom's screens detail a 'Healthy' style with big bold fonts and various bright colors to catch peoples attentions. Also I noticed a selection of frames where the computer tells passengers to change colors by literally scrolling from a red to a blue shader. Simple animation, but serves a purpose I think.

Another idea was to re-arrange existing information on screen by adapting them into other forms. I was inspired by the Monsters Inc opening sequence of animation. If I was to replicate this kind of animation into my own working I would probably use a folding technique or like a pop-out. Linking to the information gained by one of my previous posts, the information could fork out from one object with the re-arrangement of sentences and imagery on screen.

Adaptation and Professional Practice Part A - Initial visual research

Dumb Ways to Die, is a dark comical animation regarding the ridiculous deaths of these strange cartoon characters. its a campaign to get peoples attention toward health and safety around trains. The elaborate deaths with the collaboration of the woman softly singing about these impending deaths almost makes the acts acceptable and fun. The audience would probably be from quite young as well because of the colorful gruesomeness of the piece, we've all been taught what would roughly happen if you were to be in one of the situations of dumb ways to die. So we are being told what we already know in a fun and exuberant way.

Kung Fu Panda, for the un-informed people out there, is a animation created by Dreamworks following the story of a unlikely warrior as he faces various tests of valor, bravery and skill. The Panda Po, must be taught in the mysterious teachings of ancient kung fu and in the above clip you can see a short clip of him being taught in a harsh manner the skills he would require to fulfill his position as a master at kung fu. Even though it links to kung fu and not to being a ninja/shinobi, I feel this is relevant to the theme. It uses humor to draw in the audience to his trials so perhaps I could also deploy humor in mine to create the response I need in the audience to pay attention to the screen.

My Typical Morning, Is a funny animation about someone having conflicting alarms that go off every few moments to alert the character and wake him from his sleep state. All the alarms are set to 07.00 with the snooze happening also, there are a few alarms that go off after 07.00 that keep the mechanic active throughout the animation. The character also does some activities that would be vital to the morning schedule, there could also be additional steps he could have taken but I was drawn to this animation for its humor around a simple task.

Under The Sea - Layout Development

                                                            Titanic Blueprint
Designing the interior and exterior of the ship we are going to have to look into preserving a section of the ship to make it more believable. It doesn't have to be a full model of the ship but if the camera decides to travel the space we need to give the illusion to the audience the whole ship is on the seabed. We originally wanted the characters environment to resemble the size and décor of the original Titanic. But we might consider modeling the environment to a luxury yacht that gave the Titanic a nod for inspiration.
                                                           Ship Layout Example
Here we took an example of a plan from Google images and looked at possible places we could place our character. To hint towards that heritage of a 20th century maiden voyage we must bring all the design aspects from the Titanic and place them aboard this vessel. Also we need to place the set environment carefully because with these sort of ships there are potentially multiple levels of luxury. We need to tread carefully and go with a trend of build to not lead to confusion. For example, placing the luxury Suite above the command deck/station. Because then how would the vessel sail if the bridge cannot sea the ocean?

Character: Researching #1

Jetpack Joyride - screenshot

Jetpack Joyride: App based game available on IOS and Android devices, the aim of the game is pretty much to travel as far as possible, collect coins and level up on the select screen once you eventually die. The helicopter of today, the game is high score driven with the focus not on story at all here, just that you go never ending from left to right. The story is non-existent really, you burst from a laboratory on a jetpack and are pitted against obstacles placed there why? No one knows.

Limbo: Again another game that was originally released as an app available on IOS and Android devices. You are warped into Limbo a world of darkness and despair, as you look to reunite with a girl you saw at the beginning at the top of a hill picking a flower. The game has you move freely in both directions and is made as a forgiving experience with multiple checkpoints given to the player. The puzzles are quite inventive and have you manipulating physics and the world around you.

Future Shooter: I decided to choose this particularly because of the colours and different armor customizations visible from this character select screen. Perhaps I too could incorporate the use of mechanized suits for the characters to move within, or perhaps make the mechs from durable fabrics and have the game play out like a Febreze commercial. Everything made from fabrics.

'Under the sea' - Researching styles

On my group blog we have been discussing possible styles for our animation and with this post I want to cement my opinion on the matter. So please if you haven't yet seen our blog please check out www.blueturtlestudios.blogspot.co.uk

I really like the idea of creating 2D flat characters and dropping them into a 3D environment. Of course I understand that we need to first create fixed idea as we are split for choice at this moment in time, but I believe visually that they could use the style to compliment the animation in a selection of ways. I will be posting some storyboards and camera plans soon of our chosen idea to illustrate our intentions more clearly.

So the 2D characters, I would like to present them with flair possibly with animation sounds to symbolize actions and emotions. Initially I had thought of using pixel sounds, they are widely known and something as recognizable as the Pacman death tune or the Mario level up.

   Wreck it Ralph arcade machine

From the film Wreck it Ralph the perspective of the games machine is that the characters are presented in a 64bit pixelated form. It is when we are transported into this world that we discover that the characters are actually 3D and the only difference is their sizes and builds. All presented in the same sort of style. There are some items that do not translate into 3D and instead become cliché iconic items that are recognizable to the wide gaming community. I think that if we were to implicate this into an animation it would give it energy and form, playing with the use of perspective to open up the world in relation to story.

Researching into Initial Ideas - Rhys and Kyle

So Kyle and myself began scripting together our ideas and beginning to research into possible paths of creation. We had similarities in our initial ideas and we look to further express them by looking at possible styles and audiences. From my last post we both agreed that the following were intriguing for further investigations:
- Fishermen's Jealousy
- Crustaceans changing shells
- Submarine mechanic causes havoc

This animation short was just a bit of test footage for someone's animations, its quite simple and the use of the fixed camera with pan shows the environment smoothly to the audience. Perhaps we can use a fixed camera with a dynamic effect to show time passing and to speed the animation.

After watching this animation we came away with the thoughts that perhaps our idea could have the problem/ broken item being the item that causes success. For this animation it was all about the Polar Bear trying to get a catch and the problem being that the penguin was stealing all the fish.

Fantastic Voyage - HUD Research

I hadn't thought of applying Background HUD effects in my animation as I only considered something in the foreground annotating the information as we go but after watching

Yes a Miley Cyrus video. I saw some interesting designs filling the background space, after rendering my 3rd scene Ill upload some designs Ive thought of.
